چکیده

The kinetics of diffusion-controlled single-species annihilation, A + A → 0, when each particle has the same diffusion coefficient is now well understood [1]. For spatial dimension d > 2, the kinetics may be accounted for by the rate equation which predicts that the density decays as t−1 in the long-time limit. For d ≤ 2, various phenomenological approaches predict that the density decays as t−d/2, but with logarithmic corrections appearing in d = 2. Accompanying this relatively slow kinetics is a spatial organization in which the probability of finding particles at small separations is reduced compared to a random distribution. In one dimension, exact solutions, either based on an occupation number formalism [2], or by mapping the reaction onto the kinetic Ising-Glauber model [3], provide definitive results about this spatial organization and the reaction kinetics. Our goal in this paper is to describe the kinetics of heterogeneous single-species annihilation, which is defined

We investigate the kinetics of diffusion-controlled heterogeneous single-species annihilation, where the diffusivity of each particle may be different. The concentration of the species with the smallest diffusion coefficient has the same time dependence as in homogeneous single-species annihilation, A+A → 0. However, the concentrations of more mobile species decay as power laws in time, but wit...

We investigate the kinetics of many-species systems with aggregation of similar species clusters and annihilation of opposite species clusters. We find that the interplay between aggregation and annihilation leads to rich kinetic behaviors and unusual conservation laws. On the mean-field level, an exact solution for the cluster-mass distribution is obtained. Asymptotically, this solution exhibi...

Two scales in asynchronous ballistic annihilation

The kinetics of single-species annihilation, A + A → 0, is investigated in which each particle has a fixed velocity which may be either ±v with equal probability, and a finite diffusivity. In one dimension, the interplay between convection and diffusion leads to a decay of the density which is proportional to t−3/4. At long times, the reactants organize into domains of rightand left-moving part...

Femtosecond spectroscopy of optical excitations in single-walled carbon nanotubes: evidence for exciton-exciton annihilation.

Frequency-resolved femtosecond transient absorption spectra and kinetics measured by optical excitation of the second and first electronic transitions of the (8,3) single-walled carbon nanotube species reveal a unique mutual response between these transitions. Based on the analysis of the spectra, kinetics, and their distinct amplitude dependence on the pump intensity observed at these transiti...

Singlet-triplet annihilation in single LHCII complexes.

In light harvesting complex II (LHCII) of higher plants and green algae, carotenoids (Cars) have an important function to quench chlorophyll (Chl) triplet states and therefore avoid the production of harmful singlet oxygen. The resulting Car triplet states lead to a non-linear self-quenching mechanism called singlet-triplet (S-T) annihilation that strongly depends on the excitation density. In ...
